Why are callbacks important to narrow down prospective talent?

You’ve just watched dozens of self tapes where each actor adds a new and interesting twist to the character in your project. You have a list of favorites that you think would excel at the role. But you’re not sure who to book….Where do you go from here?

Virtual callbacks!

Here at Aura Casting, we believe callbacks are essential when you have a particular role to fill. Maybe the dialogue is really wordy, and you need a skilled actor to bring it to life! Maybe you need to evaluate chemistry between two actors in the same scene. Believe it or not, Zoom is an incredibly efficient way to run callbacks in 2023. Here’s what to keep in mind the next time callbacks are on the brain:

  • See how the actors react to your direction.

A self tape is a great way to see an actors’ take on the role….But what if you have something different in mind? In the Zoom room, you can give them feedback and watch them execute that direction in real time. And if they don’t take direction, you’re well aware before casting them.

  • Ensure that each actor can deliver for you and your client.

Make sure your favorites are able to perform in a timely manner before heading to set. You’ll be eager to see them deliver the lines naturally or hit the emotional moment of your script in a way that impresses everyone in the Zoom room.

  • Pair up scene partners.

Do you need an odd couple pairing to really bring your script to life? Try matching up potential duos in the callback, and see who works well together! They don’t need to be in the same location to produce comedy gold.

  • Ensure who shows up on time and is prepared.

Stress less on the shoot day! You can easily get a glimpse of each actors’ level of professionalism when you schedule them for a callback session.

  • If you want to add some fun, allow for improvisation!

The joy of working with actors is watching them bring the characters to life! Improvising, especially with a comedic script, lets the actors show you that they understand the material and can riff on set if needed.

Once you hold callbacks, you should have a better sense of who you would like to cast in your project. Questions for us? Reach out and schedule your callback session today!
