What are the must haves for audition day?

You just got the notification - New audition! Yay!

The script is great, you can see yourself in the character, you’re available on the shoot dates…

What’s next?

Here are Aura Casting’s 5 Must Haves for Audition Day:

  • You must have an understanding of the script and the role

Read through the script several times and try to understand every character and their point of view. Where does your character fit into this scene? Read the stage directions carefully, and let the details sink in. Everything on the page is there for a reason. If you’re able, take time to dissect the script and practice your part in different ways, with varying emotions and motivations. You may want play the character big and bold at first, but upon further inspection, realize that this role would be better suited with a mild mannered or neutral read. If the instructions include a reference (For example, ‘This project is in the style of Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind’), study up before taping. The more time you have to do your research, the better understanding you’ll have for the project!

  • You must have a proper self tape setup

Self tapes are so prevalent nowadays, you must have the right setup to be considered. The equipment does not have to be pricy to get the job done. You’ll need a plain wall or backdrop behind you and good lighting and sound. Keep in mind, if we like your tape, we’re going to show it to the producers, who will show it to the client in hopes of booking you. The more professional that your tape looks, the higher probability that it will be seen in the final round of the casting process.

  • You must have your lines memorized

When you’re fully memorized, you’re taking your mind off of the page and putting it into your performance. We see that when we’re watching tapes, and it makes a huge difference. There’s always a caveat, so we’re not expecting you to be off book if there’s a fast turnaround and a lot of lines to learn. But as a general rule, getting into the memorizing habit will help the character flow more effortlessly when you press record.

  • You must have all of the requested items in your submission

The excitement of getting the perfect clip sometimes takes over - and lots of actors forget about the smaller requests. Triple check the instructions when you’re sending in a tape - We include details like how to title your file, which photos we’d like to see, and how to edit your tape. The little details matter!

  • You must have fun with it!

At the end of the day, it’s all about showcasing your acting abilities! Every audition is an opportunity to practice your skills and perform new material. If you’re finding it tedious, switch up your self tape routine to keep it fresh. The way you’ll get noticed on tape is by being authentically you - so don’t stress! Feel good about turning in a genuine performance.
