5 Surprising Casting Choices
Casting is the art of matching a person to a role.
Here at Aura Casting, we love playing matchmaker for talent to client.
So when casting directors cast somebody in a role that may be out of their typical type cast, it may be very exciting and a great surprise to audiences. Take a look at some of the most surprising casting choices in film.
Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen.
When The Hunger Games were announced to be adapted from page to screen, it seemed like every agent was on the phone to the casting team pitching for the famously resilient and fierce lead of The Hunger Games series, Katniss Everdeen. For a huge upcoming blockbuster, audiences expected to see an already famous actress take on the role, instead relatively ( at the time ) unknown actress Jennifer Lawrence was announced. Her role of Katniss launched Lawrence to mega star status where she portrayed Katniss in all 4 of the original Hunger Games movies from 2012-2015.
Nicolas Cage as Spiderman Noir
Known for his eccentric and dramatic roles, Cage’s voice acting role as Spiderman Noir in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse took audiences by complete surprise. Cage’s dramatic chops added a dark and serious edge to the comedically written character.
Heath Ledger as The Joker
Known for his success in romantic comedies and serious dramas like Ten Things I Hate About You and Brokeback Mountain, the casting of Ledger as the infamous Batman Villain was an unexpected casting that resulted in the actor winning a posthumous Academy Award for his work in 2008’s The Dark Knight as The Joker. Ledger was able to showcase a transformative performance that audiences had not yet seen from him.
Cate Blanchett as Hela.
Known for her dramatic and more often serious roles, Blanchett surprised audiences by playing a larger than life villain in 2017’s Thor Ragnarok. At the time this became Blanchett’s debut role in a superhero genre film and into the Marvel universe.
Huge Jackman as Wolverine.
In the late 1990s, Jackman was mostly known for his work in theater. His casting as Wolverine in 2000’s Wolverine was surprising due to his “unknown” status in Hollywood and how different the character was from his stage work. Jackman has continued to play the famous comic book character over the past two decades, most recently in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine.
