what does a video editor do

When bringing your creative vision to life, there are a lot of steps that go into it.

Breaking down into three parts can help make a production more digestible. The three parts are known as pre-production, production and post production.

While here at Aura Casting, we help in the pre-production process by taking the heavy lift of casting into our hands. Keep reading to learn more about the post production timeline!

Post production is the phase of production that happens after the shooting days. Post production can be broken down into a few key components that make up a final edit.

  1. Editing.

    • Editing consists of importing your raw footage from the camera or storage device into a computer. Flagging the best clips and assembling them on a timeline to create a cohesive story.

  2. Sound editing and mixing.

    • Sound editing means cleaning up audio recordings, enhancing dialogue, adding music and/or sound effects, and balancing all the audio elements to create seamless audio tracks to accompany the visuals.

  3. Visual effects.

    • Visual effects can be used to enhance or create images and/or graphics into your footage. Types of VFXs include motion graphics, green screen compositing, and computer generated imagery (CGI).

  4. Color grading.

    • Color grading is to adjust and enhance the color of the raw footage to achieve a certain visual style or mood.

  5. Music and score.

    • For some edits, an original score is created from a composer, or a music supervisor will select from existing music to complement the emotional and/or visual impact.

  6. Exporting.

    • Once all elements in an edit are finalized, the project can be exported into its final format for distribution.

Post production is the final push in a production's life span before it is a final product. The goal is to refine and polish the materials created in pre-production and filmed in production.
