Steps to become a voice actor

So you want to be a voice actor? Now more than ever voice acting has become more accessible to pursue.

Here at Aura Casting we are always supporting actors to find their fit! Keep reading to learn how you can become the next voice acting sensation.

Voice acting, like any form of acting, requires practice, skill and drive. But with a few more steps you can elevate your voice to the next level.

  1. Techniques of the trade.

    • Acting: While a voice actor may never be seen by the audience, acting skills are still imperative to being able to convey emotions, portray characters and truthfully act through your vocal performance.

    • Technology Techniques: Understanding the ins and outs of the needed technology is another fundamental technique of voice acting. Studying learning what microphones, editing software, sound barriers, and editing techniques will set you up for success as you record yourself.

    • Vocal Control: Developing control over your voice and how to use it is another imperative skill for voice actors. Learning how to speak clearly, varying pitch, pacing and tone to convey different styles, characters and emotions are all in a day's work.

  2. Building Voice Acting Skills.

    • Acting Classes: To improve upon your acting skills, acting classes, professional development, community theaters and/or acting workshops are all opportunities to grow your overall acting abilities.

    • Voice Training: If you’re looking to improve your overall vocal abilities, voice lessons and/or vocal coaching can help strengthen and expand your vocal range.

    • Reading Aloud: Reading aloud scripts, books, newspapers and/or magazines is a common way to practice reading in different styles, tones and characters.

  3. Creating a Demo Reel.

    • Demo Reel Creation: After you’ve familiarized yourself with the editing softwares and recording technology, you can create a showcase of your voice acting abilities. Your demo reel should contain a variety of styles, tones and characters that highlight your range, talent and versatility.

  4. Seeking Work.

    • Online Platforms: With your demo reel in hand, you can start looking for work. Online auditions and casting calls (Aura’s speciality) seeking voice acting work is where you can submit your reel and possibly record and submit additional audition sides.

    • Local Opportunities: A good way to continue your vocal abilities is to seek work adjacent to acting that skill involves utilizing your voice talents such as radio, audio production, theater and broadcast work. This creates a more diverse skill set and more work for your demo reel.

  5. Build Connections.

    • Networking: Most industries are built on networking and voice acting is no different. Joining online groups, online talent databases, social media groups and having informationals are all ways to continue to grow your network and connections.

  6. Continuous Improvement.

    • Feedback: Seeking feedback from peers, mentors and/or connections will help you gain the constructive criticism needed from growth.

    • Practice: The only way to hone your skills is to keep practicing and improving them!

Whether you’re new or a seasoned professional voice actor, Aura Casting is always looking for our next perfect fit. Join our talent community and keep an eye on our socials to follow along for audition opportunities.
