What's the difference between casting directors and talent agencies?

Here at Aura Casting, we are frequently asked, ‘What’s the difference between casting directors and talent agencies?’

And it’s a valid question! Both casting directors and talent agencies work to book actors on commercials, films, photoshoots and voiceover projects. Casting and talent agencies are both important roles in the entertainment industry. They both read scripts, ask questions and work quickly to finalize bookings. But there are a few key differences between a casting department and a talent agency.

Here are the main takeaways:

Casting

  • Makes separate revenue from talent or an agency. Instead, casting directors have flat rates or project rates that they bill production, (Typically negotiated prior to hiring).

  • Works closely with producers to learn the details of the project.

  • Develops a casting breakdown based on the script and the client’s vision.

  • Posts casting specs online and reaches out to talent agencies.

  • Evaluates self tapes and sends the best auditions to the production team.

  • Organizes a callback schedule and runs a callback session if needed.

  • Communicates with both the producer and the talent agencies to book talent.

  • Connects booked actors with the production team.

Talent Agency

  • Makes revenue through commission from talent’s pay, (Union is + 10%, and non-union is + 20%).

  • Represents a roster of actors for commercials, films or both.

  • Works closely with actors to determine their availability for work and the best headshots to represent themselves.

  • Submits actors to casting breakdowns.

  • Communicates with their actors when they have an audition, callback or booking.

  • Reads and approves contracts when an actor books a role.

  • Responds to booking requests from the casting director.

So the process is intertwined, but there are many distinctions between the two! It is also important to note that casting directors do not have a roster of actors, only talent agencies do. Again, talent agencies receive a commission when an actor books a job, while casting directors are paid by the production team.

We are fortunate to work with so many great talent agencies that are knowledgeable of the industry and supportive of their actors!
