Take Your Self Tape to the Next Level

You just got a self tape audition. SCORE! You read the instructions and the script. Now it’s time to film…

Still have questions? You’re not alone! With the rise of self tapes, actors want to know how to do it right. One of our favorite offerings at Aura Casting have been hosting free self tape workshops on Zoom! We send out so many self tape auditions, so we want to let you know some key factors in highlighting your performance. This week, we held a workshop for 60+ people, so we’d thought we’d share a few FAQs from our chat.

As an actor, how do I get noticed by casting?

It’s all about consistency! We notice your professionalism when you turn in self tapes on time, follow the audition instructions and believably bring a character to life. In addition to great tapes, you can get noticed by keeping your casting profiles up to date, posting about your work and engaging with us on Instagram.

How important are wardrobe choices?

The most important thing that we’re looking for in a self tape is your performance. As casting directors, we can imagine you in the role with all of the necessary costumes needed. However, if you want to go the extra mile, you can always hint at what you think the wardrobe would be. If the character works in an office, we’ll appreciate your choice to wear something professional. As long as it’s already a part of your closet already! If you don’t already own it, find your best substitute.

What is casting is looking for in my audition?

We’re looking for what YOU would bring to the character. We like to have the lines memorized, unless it’s for a role reading off of a teleprompter. We’re looking to see if you can say lines naturally, as if you’re talking to a friend. Sometimes, it’s all about matching you up with other actors for the project. That part is out of your control, so don’t stress if you don’t hear from us after an audition. What is in your control is delivering solid self tapes when the opportunity presents itself.

How should I edit my self tapes?

Keep your edits simple. We just want to see the scene and your slate. There is no need to use title cards or transition effects. You can edit self tapes on your phone or through an editing software like iMovie, Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere.

How can I be more comfortable on camera?

Practice your script with a friend. Dance it out before you tape. You’ll get more comfortable as you film yourself more and more, so don’t be afraid to make bold choices and watch them back. See what works, and have fun with it!
